Forward Boyd Kane owns three Calder Cup rings and has played more American Hockey League games than nearly any other current players.
One thing the Hershey Bears captain never has done is suit up for an AHL all-star game, but that will change next month.
On Friday, the league named Kane and Chicago Wolves forward Darren Haydar as captains for the Jan. 29-30 AHL All-Star Classic in Atlantic City, N.J.
Kane will be captain of the Eastern Conference squad against Haydar’s Western Conference team during the skills competition and all-star game at Boardwalk Hall.
Captains are selected by AHL president and CEO Dave Andrews “in recognition of their outstanding service and leadership to the AHL,” according to the league announcement.
Three-time Calder Cup champ
Kane won AHL titles as captain of the 2005 Philadelphia Phantoms and 2006 Bears. He won a third Cup, with the Bears, in 2010.
Kane, 33, has played 821 games during his 14-year AHL career, amassing 189 goals and 256 assists for 445 points. He is tied for fourth place all-time with 118 career Calder Cup playoff games played.
This season with Hershey, Kane has eight goals, five assists and a team-best plus-10 rating in 24 games.
Haydar, 32, is one of the most decorated AHL players of all-time. He owns two Calder Cup rings (2004, 2008), an MVP award (2007), a scoring title (2007), a rookie-of-the-year honor (2003), and the longest scoring streak (39 games) in league history.
The 2012 game will be Haydar’s third career All-Star Classic appearance. He leads the Wolves in scoring with 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) in 24 games this season, and recently became just the 22nd AHL player to record 700 career points. He is the league’s top all-time playoff scorer.
