No one can guarantee that it will snow, but it makes for an idyllic scene as depicted in the rendering of the National Hockey League’s 2012 Winter Classic released on Monday.
The fifth annual outdoor game will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Flyers will play host to the New York Rangers.
NBC will provide live television coverage of the game; Sirius XM Satellite Radio will provide the radio broadcast.
Clearly, snow would be preferable to rain, which marred the 2011 Winter Classic in Pittsburgh. The Washington Capitals beat the host Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, at Heinz Field.
A number of other games will be played in conjunction with the ice rink at Citizens Bank Park, which is the summer home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears will take on the Adirondack Phantoms (affiliate of the Flyers) on Jan. 6 in that league’s Outdoor Classic.
The Penn State Icers men’s club hockey team will play Division III Neumann University at 8 p.m. Jan. 4. Prior to the college game, Malvern Prep faces off against LaSalle College High School at 4 p.m. in what is being billed as the High School Holiday Classic.
