Rubber Meets the Road: Winter Classic issue

The latest Pennsylvania Puck poll is not scientific. What’s the margin of error when the sample is one person?

But if the postal worker we spoke with is in any way reflective of broader interest in the Broad Street Bullies in particular or hockey in general, then there must be lots of people who would attend the 2012 Winter Classic if they had a ticket and/or could afford to buy one.

In our postal worker’s case, he balked at paying $500 per ticket but probably would do it at $100, he said.

Here’s another option for him and others: go to the Reading Royals game at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, where one lucky fan will win a pair of tickets to the Winter Classic, which will take place Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The outdoor game will pit the host the Philadelphia Flyers against the New York Rangers.

At the Royals game, each fan age 18 or older can enter to win two tickets to the Winter Classic. Tickets also will be given away to the Winter Classic alumni game on Dec. 31 and to the American Hockey League’s Outdoor Classic on Jan. 6, which features the Hershey Bears vs. the Adirondack Phantoms at Citizens Bank Park.

The Royals game also is “Turn Back the Clock Night” in recognition of Sovereign Center’s 10th anniversary. All purple zone tickets, which are normally $20.50, will be $10 off. What’s more, the Royals will be playing the archrival Elmira Jackals.

Bears vs. Baby Pens: Dec. 27-28

Here’s a post-Christmas gift for fans: a home-and-home series between Interstate 81 rivals Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

The Baby Pens play host at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena; the two teams then play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Giant Center in Hershey. The latter is Scout Night, with all attendees receiving a complimentary Scout patch.

The two teams have played each other six times so far this season. The Baby Pens have won four games, including all three in Hershey. However, the Bears are in first place in the East Division, two points ahead of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Norfolk.

Pittsburgh forecast calls for Hurricanes: Dec. 27

The National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins play host to the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Consol Energy Center. The two teams have played two games in Raleigh, N.C., this season, the Hurricanes winning, 5-3, on Nov. 12, and the Penguins winning, 3-2, on Dec. 3.

This matchup also presents another installment of Staal Wars: brothers Jordan of the Penguins and Eric of the Hurricanes. As of this morning, Jordan has 12 goals and six assists in 29 games. While his numbers aren’t awe-inspiring, they are better than Eric’s seven goals and 13 assists in 35 games. Eric, the ’Canes’ captain, is a league-worst minus-21.
