When it comes to their mask designs, every goaltender has different tastes.
Colorful tributes to family and friends, hometowns, team histories and legends of the game are splashed across the protective helmets work by goalies at all levels of hockey.
The Hershey Bears' goalies pay tribute to all facets of their lives through their mask art. Besides the descriptions below, you can see the masks in the accompanying gallery as photographed by Tim Stough.
Braden Holtby
Holtby’s rollercoaster-themed mask was designed by Dave Gunnarsson in Vrigstad, Sweden.
- The back features flags of Alberta and Saskatchewan, honoring Holtby's hometown of Marshall, Saskatchewan, which sits near the provincial border; a Bears logo; the saying “carpe diem” (seize the day); and Japanese letters spelling “kaizen,” which means continuous improvement.
- The left side features a bear riding in a rollercoaster car. Also visible is the Washington Capitals' eagle logo on the chin area.
- The right side features the rollercoaster entrance (a tribute to Hersheypark, he said), lots of track and coaster hills and dips in the background.
Dany Sabourin
Sabourin’s new mask of a fierce bear wearing an old-school hockey mask came from Detroit graphic artist Ray Bishop.
- The back includes the names of his daughters on the left, Coralie and Raphaelle; a halo over the initials of his mother, Cecile, who died in 2000, and his nickname, “Sabou.”
- The right side shows an eye and the teeth of a snarling bear’s face behind a 1970s-era goalie mask. It’s reminiscent of designs he used while playing in Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre and Vancouver.
- The left side is similar to the right, with fleur-de-lis honoring his Quebec heritage plus a feather sticking out from the bear’s mask.
