Control of the seas is another matter, but the Norfolk Admirals commanded the American Hockey League’s East Division this weekend with road wins against the Hershey Bears and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Norfolk tied a franchise record with its eighth straight win Saturday, 4-3 against Hershey, then set a new team best of nine consecutive victories with Sunday’s 3-2 verdict against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. First in the East Division with 75 points, the Admirals are four points ahead of the Baby Pens and eight in front of the Bears.
Here’s more on those and other games from the Pennsylvania hockey weekend that was:
Hershey Bears
Candy was dandy, but a win would have been preferred by the record regular-season crowd of 10,901 on hand for the Bears’ final home game of “Chocolate-Covered February.” Chris Bourque and Graham Mink each had two points in the loss to Norfolk. Bourque’s 25th goal tied his second-highest total with the Bears; his peak is 28, in 2007-08. Hershey is winless in its past four games and 4-4-0-2 in its past 10.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
The Baby Pens were 0-for-2 at home, having also lost Saturday, 2-1, against Syracuse in front of a “Salute the Troops” night crowd of 8,216. Ryan Craig potted his team’s lone goal and was the game’s No. 2 star. Scott Monroe started in goal and stopped all eight shots he faced before having to leave because of an injury.
Philadelphia Flyers, National Hockey League
Fired up by Scott Hartnell’s 29th and 30th goals, Philadelphia rallied for a 5-4 shootout win Saturday against host Calgary. The Flyers outshot the Flames, 45-21. Claude Giroux had two assists, giving him 72 points, third-best in the NHL. Recently acquired defenseman Niklas Grossman contributed two helpers and was plus-2.
Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL
Playing at Consol Energy Center, Pittsburgh cut loose on Saturday, riding Evgeni Malkin’s ninth career hat trick to an 8-1 win against Tampa Bay. Jordan Staal, James Neal and Steve Sullivan each had three points. On Sunday, undrafted goalie Brad Thiessen made the most of his recall from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, stopping 22 shots in his NHL debut for a 4-2 win against Columbus. Sullivan and Matt Cooke each had two assists. The Pens have 77 points, good for second place in the Atlantic Division, seven points behind the New York Rangers and two ahead of third-place Philadelphia.
Reading Royals, ECHL
Reading had leads in each of its three weekend games but came away with just one victory. In Elmira, N.Y., on Friday, the Royals squandered a two-goal lead to the Jackals for the third straight meeting between the teams and lost, 3-2. The Royals returned to Sovereign Center for back-to-back matchups against the Greenville Road Warriors. On Saturday, Jussi Rynnas stopped all 37 shots in a 1-0 win, Olivier Labelle notching his 26th goal for the game winner. On Sunday, the Royals scored first and last – but the Road Warriors potted three in between for a 3-2 win. The Royals have 59 points and remain in third place in the Atlantic Division.
Mercyhurst College men, Atlantic Hockey
Bye, love. Mercyhurst earned a first-round bye in the Atlantic Hockey tournament on the strength of Saturday’s 5-0 home win against Canisius. Max Strang stopped 27 shots for his third shutout of the season, putting the Lakers into a three-way tie for third place. The Lakers lost to Canisius on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y., 2-1. Mercyhurst (18-14-4 overall; 15-8-4 in the conference) will play host to a best-of-three series March 9-11, opponent to be determined.
Robert Morris University men, Atlantic Hockey
The Colonials (15-14-5 overall; 13-9-5 Atlantic Hockey) will play host to American International in a first-round conference playoff series starting at 7 p.m. Saturday after a weekend split against visiting Air Force, which wrapped up the regular-season crown. Bobby Mo won Friday, 2-1, on Ron Cramer’s goal at 1:59 of overtime, outshooting the Falcons, 37-24. The visitors blanked the Colonials on Saturday, 3-0, before a Clearview Arena-record crowd of 1,403.
Penn State University
Men: Penn State exploded for 71 shots Friday en route to a 13-1 win against Kent State, completing a 19-0 record at the Ice Pavilion. It is the fourth perfect home record in Icers history, all since 1992-93. The Icers enter the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championships in Cleveland as the No. 1 seed. They will play at 5 p.m. March 3, facing the winner of No. 6 Rutgers vs. No. 17 West Virginia.
Women: Penn State traveled to Kingston, R.I., for the Eastern Collegiate Women’s Hockey League tournament. In Saturday’s semifinal, the Lady Icers beat the University of Massachusetts, 3-2. In Sunday’s final, they lost 4-1 to the University of Rhode Island.
Erie Otters, Ontario Hockey League
It was another lost weekend for Erie, which dropped three straight. At home, the Otters fell Friday, 6-3, to Sault Ste. Marie despite Stephen Harper’s two goals, and Saturday, 4-3, to Kingston, notwithstanding Luke Cairns’ goal and two assists and Devin Williams’ 30 saves. In Canada on Sunday, the Otters lost, 6-0, to Mississauga St. Michael’s.
