The name of Butch Pettit’s blog says it all: PensFans4Ever.

And that’s what Pettit is, a Penguins fan, whether we’re talking about the National Hockey League team in Pittsburgh or about their farm team in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, just minutes from his home.

His cat, Brook, is named for Herb Brooks, who coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team that won gold in 1980 and later led the Pittsburgh Penguins. His goldfish is named Sidney, for current Pittsburgh Penguin Sidney Crosby.

Pettit is a Pittsburgh sports fan in general, however, so there’s his dog Cowher, named for former Steelers coach Bill, and Yancey, named for Yancey Thigpen, a Steelers wide receiver in the 1990s. And, yes, he even roots for the down-on-their-luck Pirates.

One of Pettit's Christmas presents was a tattoo of the Baby Pens' mascot, Tux.

His wife knew that he wanted to get a tattoo. So for Christmas about four years ago, she got him a gift certificate to Mark’s Tattooing in Wilkes-Barre. It took a little more than an hour for the artist to complete a design on his bicep of the Baby Pens’ mascot, Tux. (He added a Steelers logo a year later when they won their sixth Super Bowl.)

Pettit has been a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton season ticket holder for 11 years and rarely misses a game, even in a blizzard.

He wrote in an email: “Have seen some amazing talent come through the WBS Penguins and we have been fortunate enough to become friends with some of the families and players over the years and still keep in touch even after they leave our organization.”
