Monday's Light Skate

Pennsylvania’s top teams were 0-for-the road this weekend, stumbling and falling from Syracuse to Cincinnati, Worcester to Winnipeg.

Home was a little more hospitable, especially for the men’s and women’s teams of Mercyhurst College.

Here’s how the hockey weekend that was went down:

Philadelphia Flyers, National Hockey League

In Winnipeg, the Jets’ aerial assault against Flyers netminding continued with a 6-4 win on Saturday. The Jets have scored 15 goals in two wins against the Flyers this month. On the positive side, Flyers rookie Matt Read potted goals seven and eight, giving him 13 points and a plus-six rating this season.

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL

Tonight’s return of Sidney Crosby comes at an opportune time as the Penguins have dropped three of their past four games. The most recent one came Saturday, 3-2, at the Florida Panthers. Still, the Penguins have 25 points and are tied with Philadelphia for first place in the Atlantic Division, although the Flyers have one game in hand.

Hershey Bears, American Hockey League

Hershey dropped back-to-back shootouts, 3-2 Friday at Syracuse, and 6-5 Saturday at Giant Center. The Bears are 1-2-1-2 in November, earning four of a possible 12 points. Goalie Braden Holtby continues to search for answers as his save percentage sits at a not-so-great .888 through 10 games.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, AHL

New England can get old really fast when you lose three in a row there as the Baby Pens did this weekend. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had won its first eight road games of the season before falling Friday (3-2 at Portland), Saturday (4-3 at Manchester), and Sunday (3-1 at Worcester). Small consolation: defenseman Simon Despres (one assist) was the game’s No. 3 star Friday, and forward Ben Street (goal, assist, five shots) was No. 2 star Saturday.

Reading Royals, ECHL

Reading is 7-7-1-1 and in second place behind Wheeling in the Atlantic Division after shootout losses against Cincinnati, 3-2, on Friday, and Toledo, 5-3, on Saturday. Goalie Joe Palmer made 40 saves on Friday, then was 15-for-15 Saturday in relief of Karel St. Laurent, who allowed five of 22 shots to get past him. Olivier Labelle scored his 11th goal of the season on Saturday, extending his Royals career-goals record to 55.

Mercyhurst College

Men: The Lakers, taking on Atlantic Hockey Association rival Bentley, managed a 0-0 overtime tie on Friday and a 2-1 win Saturday. After an 0-4 start, the Lakers are 6-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the AHA.
Women: Call it a “Bram Slam” as senior Bailey Bram potted five goals and five assists, leading the Lakers to consecutive blowout wins vs. Yale. On Friday, Mercyhurst scored two times in the first 47 seconds, en route to a 9-1 win. Saturday’s matinee was a little closer, 6-2. Goalie Hillary Pattenden got both wins, the 86th and 87th of her career. She is just four behind the NCAA Division I record of 91 set by Wisconsin’s Jessie Vetter.

Penn State University

Men: Home ice was the difference as the top-ranked teams in the American Collegiate Hockey Association split a home-and-home series. The No. 1 Icers’ 10-game winning streak ended Friday at Delaware, as the No. 2 Blue Hens pecked out a 4-3 win. On Saturday in State College, the Icers rebounded with a 5-1 win, their record now 11-1.
Women: At home against SUNY-Cortland, the Lady Icers dropped consecutive 2-1 decisions, in overtime on Friday and in regulation on Saturday.

Erie Otters, Ontario Hockey League

The Otters won their last game in October and first in November. It has been “No”vember ever since, with seven straight losses. The most recent ones came Friday, 8-1 at Kitchener, and Saturday, 5-0 at home against Guelph. Through 22 games, the Otters’ league-worst record is 3-19-0-0, good for six out of a possible 44 points.
