Monday's Light Skate: Nov. 28 edition

We’re making a list and checking it twice. No, not that list. We’re talking about this week’s Monday’s Light Skate.

Here’s how the hockey weekend that was helped usher in the holiday season:

Philadelphia Flyers, National Hockey League

Philadelphia beat Montreal, 3-2, in Friday’s matinee at Wells Fargo Center. Saturday’s visit to Madison Square Garden was a preview of the Winter Classic, the Flyers losing, 2-0, against the host New York Rangers. The Flyers and Rangers play again Dec. 23 in New York before the Jan. 2 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia.

Pittsburgh Penguins, NHL

Paced by Sidney Crosby’s three assists, host Pittsburgh beat Ottawa, 6-3, on Friday. At Montreal on Saturday, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang showed plenty of blood and more than a little guts in a 4-3 win. A high hit by the Canadiens’ Max Pacioretty sent Letang to the dressing room late in the third period. He returned to score the overtime winner despite playing with a broken nose. With another assist Saturday, Crosby has eight points in four games since his return from post-concussion symptoms.

Hershey Bears, American Hockey League

At Wilkes-Barre, the Bears overcame 61 minutes of penalties on Friday to beat the host Baby Penguins, 3-2, in a shootout. Hershey forward Ryan Potulny potted his first two goals of the season, having returned last week after a nearly two-month recovery from sports hernia surgery. On Saturday, the Bears -- donning special Washington Capitals jerseys -- lost to Lake Erie, 5-4, in a shootout. Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee watched the game with Bears president and GM Doug Yingst.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, AHL

The Baby Pens rebounded from Friday’s loss to Hershey to win, 3-2, Saturday at Binghamton. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is in first place in the Eastern Division, two points ahead of Norfolk and four points ahead of Hershey.

Reading Royals, ECHL

The Royals lost Friday, 4-2, against Chicago at Sovereign Center, and Saturday, 3-2 in overtime, at Elmira. Reading has dropped five straight to fall to 7-9-2-1, still good for second place in the Eastern Division. The Royals are three points behind first-place Wheeling, which has four games in hand on Reading.

Mercyhurst College

Men: At Madison, Wis., the Lakers dropped both games against Wisconsin, 7-2 Friday and 5-2 Saturday. The games may have been closer than the scores suggested, though, with Mercyhurst outshooting the Badgers on Friday, 26-21, and Wisconsin edging the Lakers on Saturday, 28-27. Mercyhurst’s record is 6-7-1 overall, 5-1-1 in the Atlantic Hockey Association.

Robert Morris University

Men: The Colonials returned to action after a two-week layoff to take three of four possible points from Army. At home, Bobby Mo won Friday, 5-2, and tied Saturday, 3-3. Goalie Brooks Ostergard had 83 saves in the two games, including 47 on Saturday.
Women: Several streaks ended Saturday as the Colonials dropped a 3-2 decision to Quinnipiac in the championship of the the Nutmeg Classic in Storrs, Conn. Robert Morris, playing its ninth straight road game, saw its five-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten skein snapped. Freshman Rebecca Vint’s program-record point streak ended at 12 games. Junior goalie Kristen DiCiocco, who posted a 1-0 shutout of Yale on Friday, was named the tournament’s outstanding goaltender.

The beginning of November was the end of the Otters’ highlights for the month. After beating Guelph on Nov. 4, Erie dropped 10 straight, including three in a row over the weekend, during which they were outscored 17-6. The Otters’ league-worst record stands at 3-22-0-0.
