A low-level professional hockey league has approached city officials in Williamsport about building a 3,000-seat hockey rink.
The second-year Federal Hockey League has eight teams, mostly in the Northeast, but none in Pennsylvania. The league’s marquee player is leading scorer Pierre Dagenais, who has played 142 games in the National Hockey League.
Don Kirnan, the FHL’s commissioner, and his daughter, Nicole Kirnan, owner of the FHL’s 1000 Islands Privateers in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., attended a public meeting in Williamsport last week.
The Williamsport Sun-Gazette said the Kirnans outlined plans for a rink with as many as 3,000 seats, a restaurant, pro shop, locker rooms, scoreboard and sound system. Besides hosting an FHL team, the rink also would be used for youth hockey, figure skating and other community activities.
Don Kirnan also is owner and president of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Stars of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, which includes the Philadelphia Revolution. The Stars list 11 alumni who have gone on to play in the NHL.
