Last weekend’s showdown between the women’s teams from Mercyhurst College and Robert Morris University brought out the best in College Hockey America.
Three Lakers and one Colonial comprised the CHA’s weekly award winners, who were announced on Monday.
- Jill Szandzik, a senior defenseman from Mercyhurst, was named player of the week. The Warren, Mich., native had three goals against Robert Morris, including her first career two-goal game in Friday’s 3-0 Lakers win. Szandzik has a career-high seven goals this season.
- Mercyhurst goalie Hillary Pattenden posted her sixth shutout of the season on Friday, giving her 19 wins this season and an NCAA-record 99 career victories. Pattenden also was in goal for Saturday’s 4-4 tie against Robert Morris. She stopped 57 of 61 shots in the two games. She is a native of Surrey, British Columbia.
Freshman forwards Kristine Grenier of Mercyhurst and Rebecca Vint of Robert Morris were chosen as co-rookies of the week.
- Grenier, of St. Leon, Manitoba, assisted on the Lakers’ first two goals in Saturday’s 4-4 tie, giving her 10 points this season. It was the second multi-point game of her career.
- Vint, the Colonials’ leading scorer, had one goal and one assist in Saturday’s tie, giving her 13 multi-point games. She extended her single-season school records in goals (21), assists (21), and points (42). She hails from Caledon, Ontario.
